Small Groups

True North Praise Band

Suggested Grades: 10-12
Regular activity: practice
Special events: worship music for dedications, summer mission trips, etc.
-True North practices regularly and vigorously to serve as worship leaders for the Sunday night experience, playing no fewer than three times each month.  This group also serves as the musical ambassador of MUMY.  This group is intended for the older musicians who are skilled in their talents and ability to work within a team structure.

Media Club

Suggested Grades: 6-12
Regular activity: use of multimedia to capture elements of creation
Special events: photography retreats
-Media Club meets to provide students the opportunity to capture and edit their own discoveries in creation.  This group constantly learns with new techniques and equipment and shares products with each other and with the MUMY.  All students who have a desire to express themselves creatively would be excellent members of this small group.

Runners Group

Suggested Grades: 9-12
Regular activity: running at Schroeder City Park
Special events: competitive runs, summer retreat
-The runners group meets to develop the endurance of the God-given body for the purpose of God’s glory.  Runners complete laps at Schroeder City Park at their own pace.  This group will also serve to host events for runners in the Manchester area.  This group is intended for students with a desire to develop cardiovascular fitness, capable of running for at least a half hour at a time.

Blanket Makers Group

Suggested Grades: 6-8
Regular activity: knitting and creative projects for the newly baptized or hospitalized
Special events: lock-in
-Blanket makers will serve in a hospitality ministry, which will provide blankets for those baptized at MUMC or those who would appreciate a hospital visit.  A willing heart and desire to work are the only requirements for participation in this small group.  

Outdoors Group

Suggested Grades: 6-10
Regular activity: outdoor adventure activities
Special events: hiking trip, campouts, climbing wall sessions
-The outdoors group meets to enjoy God’s great outdoors through participating in events such as climbing, fishing, frisbee golf, camping, rafting, snow tubing, etc.  This group is travel-intensive and will require a high degree of responsibility and safety-mindedness in its participants.

Video Gamers Group

Suggested Grades: 6-11
Regular activity: video games in the basement of MUMC
Special events: premiere parties, movie viewings
-Video gamers meet to play on cutting edge or retro systems at MUMC and host parties for new games or new movies.  This group appeals to students who regularly socially network through gaming, especially via the Playstation network.

Young Musicians Group

Suggested Grades: 6-9
Regular activity: specific instrument practice and occasional group practices
Special events: providing worship music for Sunday night experience
-Younger musicians will explore their skills on a weekly basis and will learn to play as part of a group on this team.  Those who are new to music or are learning to lead worship will find a welcoming environment here.

Breakfast Bible (more information to come)

Suggested Grades: 9-12
Regular activity: breakfast and Bible Study
Special events:
-Breakfast Bible is a long-running small group for Senior High students.

Design and Drama Team

Suggested Grades: 6-10
Regular activity: preparing drama or creative elements for Sunday evening experiences
Special events: Organizing Youth Sunday, lay speaking engagements
-This team is in charge of the live creative elements for the Sunday evening experience.  They will be provided with a list of needs for design and drama elements, which will need to be prepared for the coming weeks.  Students with artistic or acting aptitudes are needed for this small group.

Sunday Production Crew

Suggested Grades: 10-12
Regular activity: producing Sunday evening Wrap sessions
Special events: retreat
-This small group is a sub-group of the Media Club which executes all of the technical tasks for the Sunday night experience.  This includes slide production and display, sound and lighting arrangement, and videography.  Members of this group will be selected from the Media Club.

Lazer Tag Group

Suggested Grades: 6-8
Regular activity: Lazer Tag games at MUMC
Special events: outing to The Edge, lock-in
-The Lazer Tag small group is a group which meets to play each week with other Mid-High friends.  Although these students primarily play, they will also participate in some of the hospitality ministries of MUMY.

Basketball/Football Group

Suggested Grades: 10-12
Regular activity: Basketball or football at Schroeder Park or MUMC
Special events: host Super Bowl party, Upward events
-This sports group for older students will be friendly competition with a community emphasis.  This will be a group which escapes the weekly school routine to spend time with friends and to meet some new ones.

Multi-Cultural Studies

Suggested Grades: 10-12
Regular activity: meet to discuss issues of different cultures, watch movies, hear guest speakers
Special events: Inter-faith meetings, multi-course dinners, hosting 30-Hour Famine, events with other churches
-This group is intended for mature students who want to engage different cultures and learn from them.  The Spiritual and social elements of many different groups, within and outside of the Manchester community, will be explored.

"Underneath the Bible" Bible Study

Suggested Grades: 10-12
Regular activity: study of the Bible
Special events: retreat
-This group will explore the historical and social contexts of the Scripture passages used during the Sunday evening experience.  An evaluation of each week’s lesson will also be conducted, along with occasional surveys of other small groups.  This group will be available to students in grades 10-12 only.

Book Club

Suggested Grades: 8-11
Regular activity: meet to discuss the latest reading
Special events: lock-ins
-The Book Club will look at selected readings each week to discuss some of the deeper elements within.  Both secular and Christian selections will be assigned.  A deeper look at today’s society will be facilitated by the leaders of this group.  In addition, this will be a very relaxed time to meet and talk with friends.

Juniors/Seniors Small Group

Suggested Grades: 11-12
Regular activity: discussion meeting
Special events: college visits, guest speakers
-This small group is exclusively for students in the final two years of high school and will discuss the week’s topic from the perspective of those who will soon be graduating.  A chief end of this small group will be to connect students with post-secondary schools and resources that will be valuable upon graduation.

NON-DEVOTIONAL SMALL GROUPS

(These small groups will meet irregularly and will not discuss the week’s devotional topic)

Spirit Squad

Suggested Grades: 9-11
Regular activity: attending games, concerts, and activities
Special events: retreat
-Spirit Squad is a group which provides moral support to other MUMY students by attending games, concerts, and activities, wearing the official “Spirit Squad” T-shirt to encourage others.  Because Spirit Squad meets at different days and times each week and travels each time, flexible schedules are important for participants.  Enrollment in this small group is limited to 10.

Youth Advisory Council

Suggested Grades: 9-12 (one rep. from grades 6-8)
Regular activity: discussing future events and needs
Special events: retreat
-This council meets to provide feedback to the MUMY leadership and to help plan events which affect the entire MUMY program.  Students who serve on this council should have a desire to discern God’s direction for the ministry and to contribute to the overall success and maintenance of the program.  Youth Advisory Council members will be expected to be members of another small group, as well.
