Five Essential Practices
At a recent gathering of Manchester leaders, I was asked about my expectations of church members. It was a great question, a really good way to think about our pastoral transition. As the Lead Pastor of Manchester UMC, what would I expect of the members of this congregation?
The answer I gave came to mind almost immediately, without needing much thought. I expect Christian discipleship. I expect members of the congregation to be faithful followers of Jesus Christ.
Specifically, that means doing five things. A disciple of Jesus routinely engages in five essential practices. The five you’ll see a faithful disciple of Jesus doing are worshiping, learning, serving, inviting, and giving.
Since 2018, task forces here at Manchester have been focusing on these practices, working toward the goals established in the “2021 Plan.” And over the next five weeks on Sunday mornings, we’ll celebrate the work of these “WIN” Teams as we think together about the practices of discipleship.
It’s all part of a sermon series called “Doers of the Word,” focusing on the familiar line from James 1; “But be doers of the word, and not merely hearers who deceive themselves.” Each week of the series will highlight a particular practice of Christian discipleship, the theology behind these practices, and some specific opportunities to engage.
We start with “worship” this Sunday morning, and I’m really looking forward to sharing Holy Communion as well, a central component to our worship life. Come on over and let’s connect with God together as we worship in God’s presence!
