Whisper Words of Wisdom

This week we start a brand new worship series here at Manchester UMC. We’re calling it “Whisper Words of Wisdom: Spiritual Themes in the Music of the Beatles.” I am really excited for these next four weeks!

Divine revelation comes through the Holy Spirit, through the Scriptures, through the teachings of the church … and … in the lyrics of the Beatles?!? Really? Isn’t it a bit, oh I don’t know, heretical to explore Beatles lyrics for spiritual themes?

Honestly, no. If we truly believe that God is everywhere, that the Spirit is on the move all around us, then it is not in the least bit inappropriate to listen for God’s voice in elements of pop culture. The Holy Spirit can move in a movie, a book, the lyrics of a song, pretty much however She wants to move!

So for the next few weeks we’ll listen to John, Paul, George, and Ringo. But we’ll really be listening for the voice of God. Here’s a little preview of where we are going:

Week 1 – Songs: Help, Let it Be

            Scriptures: Matthew 6:5-15; Proverbs 2:1-5

            Spiritual theme: Prayer

Week 2 – Songs: All You Need is Love, She Loves You

Scriptures: 1 John 4:7-12; Song of Songs 8:5-7

            Spiritual theme: Love

Week 3 – Songs: Eleanor Rigby, We Can Work It Out

            Scriptures: Ephesians 4:1-16; Ecclesiastes 4:9-12

            Spiritual theme: Unity

Week 4 – Songs: Across the Universe, Blackbird

            Scriptures: Mark 9:2-9; Psalm 37:1-6

            Spiritual theme: Identity

So that’s the playlist! I hope you get a lot out of the series; I know I will. And even if you are not a Beatles fan, that does not give you permission to skip church!!! I assure you there will be an answer, so let it be. And come to worship!

A Dream of Manchester UMC

The night before my first Monday as part of the staff of Manchester UMC, I had a dream. I dreamed I was packing a large suitcase. Evidently, I was traveling to some spot where I was to address a large group of people on a topic dealing with spiritual life. But I was having

Exactly How Did I Get Here?

Romans 5:6-8. We all wonder how we got to the places we inhabit. Sometimes we muddle along and find ourselves in a place of great blessing. We receive more than we’ve given. But the opposite is also true: Sometimes we do our due diligence, but everything turns to mud. Problems

This Moment To Arise

Psalm 37:1-6. The transfiguration event revealed the identity of Jesus in a flash of light. The disciples witnessed it, but had to go back down the mountain into the darkness of the world around them. Even though we are broken and flawed, God’s “limitless, undying love” shines all around us
