Community Dinners Volunteer Team

Our Mission

Foster multi-generational relationships and discipleship at Manchester UMC through food and programs on Wednesday evenings.

Our Purpose

  • Provide a convenient and affordable meal option for all generations and life stages
  • Create connections and deepen relationships within the congregation
  • Engage more people in weekly discipleship through serving and learning opportunities
  • Offer participants an easy way to invite others to experience Manchester UMC
  • Foster greater collaboration among all Wednesday evening programs and participants

Sign-up to Help this Fall

Help make the Community Dinners (Meals and Ministry or M&M) program possible by signing up to volunteer for one or more of the 10 meals scheduled for this Fall semester. You can choose from a variety of volunteer roles/positions based on your interests (e.g. shopping, cooking, serving, organizing, etc.) and availability. Support and training is provided for those volunteering in new roles. Your meal is FREE on the weeks you volunteer!

Weekly Leader Positions

  • Head Chef – Kitchen Leader (1 volunteer per week)
  • Front of House – Fellowship Hall Leader (1 volunteer per week)

Weekly Crew Positions

  • Co-Head Chef (1 volunteer per week)
  • Kitchen Cooking Crew (4 volunteers per week)
  • Kitchen Clean Up Crew (2 volunteers per week)
  • Front of House Crew (2-3 volunteers per week)
  • Check In and Sales (1 volunteer per week)
  • Sell Bridge Bread (1 volunteer per week)

Volunteer Role Descriptions

Head Chef – Kitchen Leader (1 per week)

The Head Chef proposes the menu for their week. They and their team are also responsible for picking up, preparing and serving the food for their designated meal. They also facilitate kitchen clean-up, including dishwashing. They coordinate the work of the Kitchen Crew. Volunteers can choose which week(s) they serve in this role.

Front of House – Fellowship Hall Leader (1 per week)

This person and their team are responsible for room setup, room clean-up, beverage service, guest check-in, guest hospitality (e.g., decorations, entertainment, etc.) and future reservations. They also recruit and coordinate the work of the Front of House Team volunteers.  Volunteers can choose which week(s) they serve in this role.

Co-Head Chef (1 per week)

The Co-Head Chef assists the Head Chef. They and their team are also responsible for picking up, preparing and serving the food for their designated meal. They also facilitate kitchen clean-up, including dishwashing. They coordinate the work of the Kitchen Crew. Volunteers can choose which week(s) they serve in this role.

Kitchen Cooking Crew (4 per week)

Volunteers in this role support the Head Chef with preparing and serving the food for their designated meal and assist with kitchen clean-up. Volunteers can choose which week(s) they serve in this role.

Kitchen Clean Up Crew (2 per week)

Starting at 4:30 p.m., volunteers in this role support the Head Chef by being an extra set of hands during busy serving times and assist with kitchen clean-up. Volunteers can choose which week(s) they serve in this role.

Front of House Crew (2-3 per week)

Volunteers in this role support the Front of House Lead with room setup, room clean-up and beverage service and assist with guest check-in, guest hospitality, and reservations. Volunteers can choose which week(s) they serve in this role.

Check in and Sell Meals on Wednesday Nights (1 per week)

A volunteer in this role greets and checks in our guests, sells the following weeks meals, and clean-up and put away Fellowship Hall. Volunteers can choose which week(s) they serve in this role.

Sell Bridge Bread (1 per week)

A volunteer in this role supports the Bridge Bread by setting up the setup the Bridge Bread table, sell the Bridge Bread items, and clean-up and put away the Bridge Bread table. Volunteers can choose which week(s) they serve in this role.

Exactly How Did I Get Here? Part II

The Scripture for this final sermon is Mark 6:30-44. In this passage, Jesus recommends a time of rest and spiritual renewal for the disciples. The twelve had just returned from a mission during which they preached and healed. Jesus thought his closest followers needed a Sabbath, so he led them to a deserted place to recuperate. But Jesus’s planned retreat was interrupted because the crowds discovered where he was and packed the place. In this setting, Jesus demonstrates his compassion, showing himself to be the Good Shepherd as he cares for his people, sacrificing his own much-needed rest.

In God We Trust

Throughout the centuries, “trust in God” has been a frequent theme in our prayers, our hymns and our sacred songs. It is certainly a biblical theme as well. There are 182 references to “trust” in the Bible, and most of these refer to us placing our trust in God. In America, our money even proclaims “In God We Trust.” I invite you to join us for worship this weekend as we take a look at Psalm 105 and at the refrain, “In God We Trust.” Does that mean that we expect God will “fix” everything? What about free will? How should we really trust in God?
