Pastor's Note

Have you ever felt like this?

by Rev. Andy Blacksher, Executive Pastor Simon Peter, Thomas (called Didymus), Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, Zebedee’s sons, and two other disciples were together.  Simon Peter told them, “I’m going fishing.” They said, “We’ll go with you.” They set out in a boat, but throughout the night they caught nothing.

Centering Prayer, traditionally called contemplative prayer, is a method of prayer which prepares us to receive the gift of God’s presence.  It facilitates the movement from more active modes of prayer into a receptive prayer of resting in God.

This group is studying the book, Everything Belongs: The Gift of Contemplative Prayer, by Richard Rohr.

This popular and bestselling book of the renowned Franciscan challenges people to move beyond the comfort of a settled life toward an understanding of themselves that is rooted in their connection to God. Only when they rest in God can they find the certainty and the freedom to become all that they can be. Contemplation has its place at the heart of Christianity, a place that allows people to experience how “everything belongs.”

Description:  Most Christians know the Lord’s Prayer by heart. We pray it often, at different times and in different settings. We remember it as the prayer that Jesus taught his disciples. But do we really understand and appreciate the meaning and power of its words, what we ask of God each time we pray it?

NEW Location:  Room 226 | Manchester UMC
Zoom Meeting ID:  347 375 197

Leader:  Rev. Brenda Becker

The Tuesday Morning Bible Study is studying Richard Rohr’s book “Jesus’ Alternative Plan: The Sermon on the Mount.”

When Jesus talked about the Kingdom of God, he was talking about an utterly different way of relating to human society as we know it. He lays out a blueprint for this new life in his best-known teaching, the Sermon on the Mount. From the Beatitudes onward, the Sermon on the Mount overturns conventional wisdom and traditional power structures, offering a plan for an alternative way of being.

Acclaimed spiritual leader and Franciscan priest Richard Rohr explores the implications of this vision in Jesus’ Alternative Plan. Rohr goes through the teachings of the sermon, explaining the historical and cultural context of each verse and offering guidance for what it means for Christians today.

Participants are not required to purchase this book.

This group is meeting in person, as well as virtually on Zoom. Child care is available with advance reservation.

This is a group of mature women who enjoy reading and discussing a variety of religious themed books, by authors Adam Hamilton, Phillip Yancey, Henri Nouwen, and many others.

Book Description:

Join this group as they begin studying the brand new book, “Somehow: Thoughts on Love” by Anne Lamott.

Book Description:   “Love is our only hope,” Anne Lamott writes in this perceptive new book. “It is not always the easiest choice, but it is always the right one, the noble path, the way home to safety, no matter how bleak the future looks.”

In Somehow: Thoughts on Love, Lamott explores the transformative power that love has in our lives: how it surprises us, forces us to confront uncomfortable truths, reminds us of our humanity, and guides us forward. “Love just won’t be pinned down,” she says. “It is in our very atmosphere” and lies at the heart of who we are. We are, Lamott says, creatures of love.

In each chapter of Somehow, Lamott refracts all the colors of the spectrum. She explores the unexpected love for a partner later in life. The bruised (and bruising) love for a child who disappoints, even frightens. The sustaining love among a group of sinners, for a community in transition, in the wider world. The lessons she underscores are that love enlightens as it educates, comforts as it energizes, sustains as it surprises.
